EARNED NOT GIVEN

"A clinical pharmacist is just one surgery away from being a medical doctor." One of my friends once asserted boldly. Now, you do not have to agree with this, in fact, I did not agree with her at that time and I still don't. But I definitely got the message; the roles of pharmacists have expanded steadily over the years. And pharmacists now do far more than just sitting moodily behind a counter and dispensing drugs.   When we hear "desert," sand and dust instantly float into our minds that we almost sneeze in response. Similarly, people always think about drugs when the word "Pharmacist" is mentioned. In fact, the word "drug" (or drugs) is present in nearly all the definitions of a pharmacist. As for those definitions that do not have drugs, the word "medicine" (or medicines) stands in its place. As a result, phrases like "Legal Drug Dealer" and "Custodian of Drugs" have become fancy titles for pharmacist...

Fields of Glory: Faculty of Agriculture Plows Through Faculty of Physical Sciences with a 4-0 Victory

By Otaru Testimony Afigie When the Faculties of Agriculture and Physical Sciences collided in the latest round of fixtures one thing was certain- one of the teams would go home bruised. And so it was as the Faculty of Agriculture emerged 4-0 winners in this one-sided contest.  The match was evenly balanced in it's early stages as both teams surged forward without any side actually controlling the game.  The Physical Science team eventually lived up to their name as they completely dominated the midfield thanks to heroics from Anora, who dictated proceedings from her centre-midfield role. Another stand out player for Physical Science in this period was Divine. Divine consistently terrorised the Agric defenders on the left wing.  Unfortunately, Divine was prone to excessive showboating and was eventually identified as a threat prompting the Agric team to mark her tightly. Consequently Divine was pocketed and largely kept quiet for most parts of the game except for he...

Social Sciences Deliver a Strong Dose of Victory, Leaves Pharmacy Prescribed with a 6-0 Loss for their Med-iocre

By Otaru Testimony Afigie Where do we start? How do we tell this? The Faculty of Pharmacy have been disgracefully sent packing from the 5-a-side after their abysmal display against the Faculty of Social Sciences, despite the fact that Pharmacy needed to win by a single goal margin to progress.  In the early stages,  Pharmacy pretended to have something to offer, as they matched the strength and tempo of the Social Science team man-for-man for four minutes at least, before the flood gates opened in the fifth minute. A beautifully taken corner was whipped into the area and Alex was there to convert. Less than two minutes later, Dr Soft the Pharmacy goalkeeper was picking the ball from his own net after his pathetic dive failed to prevent the ball from going in. What had happened? Olaoluwa of the SOSSA team decided to try his luck from deep inside his own half and the gods of football smiled on him.  Before the SOSSA fans could comport themselves, they were celebrating...

Minds Over Fields: Faculty of Education Outsmarts Faculty of Agriculture in a 3-0 Win

By Otaru Testimony Afigie Education qualified for the knock -out stage in style as they thumped Agric 3-nil. The score line actually does not tell the full story as it could have been worse for the Agric team, given that Education outplayed them in every sense of the word. Education came into the game knowing that anything less than a win would result in their elimination, yet they didn't play as if they were under any pressure at all.  Hynex, atoning for his litany of misses in the early stages of the game, opened the scoring for the Education team. The goal was a well worked team effort, with Jerry eventually delivering a De Bruyne-esque pass for Hynex to finish.  Normally, the goal should have restored Hynex's confidence and spur him to grab a couple more, but it didn't and Hynex proceeded to miss a couple of tap-ins.  Osas, from the Agric team was the stand out player in the first period as he effectively carried out his defensive duty to ensure the score remained 1-0...

TO YOU MY FRIEND

Hi, are you dead? Good, 'cause I am too. On the inside that is. What you see is merely a shell. Hollow, empty and soulless.  No empathy. No emotion.  Simply a being composed of an extremely combustible mixture of nihilism and self-hate alongside a tinge of acrimony, all emulsified by a proportionate amount of gritty visceral animosity.  Unhappy, joyless. Thoughts depressing, verging precariously towards the suicidal. Each day, I must complete my ritual of doing the same banal things I did the previous day.  Nothing new, nothing different. Not living. Just existing. Repeating the same things, every day, every month and every year. Not a single difference. Merely completing each day with absolutely zero motivation to anticipate the next.  Speak to me, my friend, I pray thee; what keeps you going? What makes you want to live each day? Tell me, and I might just find a reason to live again. Your friend, Otaru Testimony Afigie

Cansado

Otaru Testimony Sweaty, tired and irritated he trudged to his room. Like a teenager impaired by hangover he collapsed exhaustedly on the bed. The adverse effects of carrying out three successive practicals began manifesting.  However, an overwhelming pang of guilt forced his slumberous eyes open. Sleep, not now. There was the small issue of writing the practical report and by the time he began, it was less than four hours to midnight as cooking had consumed a considerable amount of his time. Furthermore, he was yet to complete his designated three hours of reading for the day.   As he ate, the brutal chastising from the lab attendant earlier, inhibited the food's journey. He'd broken an apparatus. It wasn't really his fault. He'd tried really hard to stay awake. One moment the pipette was in his hands then, he blinked and found himself staring at the smashed pipette on the floor.  He turned to his laptop for solution and began typing. "To the Dean Faculty of P...
