How good is the Moon Knight Series?
As part of the phase four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), the first season of the Moon Knight series ran from March 30th 2022 to May 4th 2022. The Moon Knight Series has been described by many as the best Marvel series ever and with stellar performances from Oscar Isaac, Ethan Hawke and May Calamawy, it's really difficult not to agree. But how good exactly is this series that has earned praises from different quarters?
Well based on my rankometer, the Moon Knight with an overall rating of 7.2/10 is Marvel's best series so far bettering the likes of WandaVision (7/10),What if (6.8/10), Loki (6.7/10), Hawkeye (6.5/10), The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (6/10) and others. And oh, these are my own ratings though. That been said, what were the short comings that prevented this glorious series from reaching a 10/10 or even a 9/10. Well let's see and judge.
But before we get to that, I must really commend the wonderful job Marvel are doing. Marvel are actually showing us that it is possible to watch an American movie without swear words-well apart from shit apparently-, which means Marvel movies are safe for kids to watch. Well aside Deadpool and The Eternals, and that scene from Episode one when an elderly man driving a truck of chicken gives Steven the middle finger which kind of reminds me of MJ giving Peter the middle finger in Spiderman: Homecoming, and Star Lord giving Thanos his in Infinity War.
So back to the Moon Knight season one, what were the flaws in it? Well hop on let's go....
Note: This is not a comprehensive list yet as more items may be added subsequently. Article may contain spoilers.
Episode One
Rating: 7.5/10
•This episode opens with Steven on his bed. As he wakes up we see sand around his bed which he observes for signs of disturbance. But watch that scene again carefully and you'll notice a footprint on the sand just before Steven steps on it. So how come? Because we know later on that Steve pours fresh sand on his footprints on the sand every night before he goes to bed. Then how did this foot print come about?
• This particular error is common in most action movies even in the Mission Impossible franchise. It was even more glaring in the Korean series All Of Us Are Dead when Nam-ra's dad was shot as he ran at by a least three trained soldiers running directly behind him and none of the bullets hit him. In the Moon Knight series, Steven wakes up in the Alps and gets chased by Harrow's goons who also shoot him, however none of the bullets hit Steven. How?
•As Steven escapes in a cup cake van, a car containing Harrow's men catch up with him and drives beside him. One of the men pulls out his gun and holds it steady at Steven but doesn't shoot. Why? Eventually, a second car drives up from the other side of the van and and another man draws out his gun points it at Steven until Steven blacks out and Marc takes over and interestingly, the first guy kept aiming his gun at Steven without shooting. Why? Why? Why?
•About the phone Steven discovered in his flat. Was the phone turned off initially? If so how come the missed calls? Or was it turned on? Then how come Steven had never heard it ring before? Then how the heck was Layla able to recognize that Steven was Marc speaking with a British accent when Marc and Steven sound completely different when talking?
•Harrow is overpowered. Although we don't really see much of that in this episode, but it is evident in the scene where Harrow confronted Steven in the museum. Harrow said something about the voices in Steven's head that were making him relentless. So the question is; how did Harrow know that even before he judged Steven? If he had said this before he judged Steven it would make perfect sense because we see later in episode four that when Harrow judges anyone he gets to see their moments of sin and pain.
Episode two
Rating: 7/10
•Museum's security camera footage. As Steven and JB watch the security camera footage from the previous night, everything seems normal. But a closer look would reveal that on one of the numerous screens, the CCTV camera appears to have shifted its position to better capture Steven as he ran out of frame. Had the camera remained in place, Steven would have run out of its frame completely, but the camera seemed to have tilted upwards slightly to accommodate Steven. At first you'll think this is normal, then you realize that most CCTV cameras remain in place after their installation and cannot adjust their positions themselves. Except the museum had cameras that adjusted themselves to any direction motion is detected which is very unlikely.
•When Steven hugs Crawler (the stature he usually talks to), Crawler's eyes move sideways. And I literally watched the series till the end still expecting an explanation for or even the significance of that to no avail. Maybe we'll just see it I'm season two.
•When Steven sees and holds the scarab for the first time he presses a button that sets the scarab floating in the air. So how did Steven know how to do this? Because he had never actually seen anyone else do it before and he didn't even know what the scarab was at that time. And we can't assume he read it in a book either because if he actually did, he would have known the function of the scarab.
•As the scarab floats in the air, its upper part hovering above its lower part, Marc appears on the wall of the locker room which is reflective and the scarab stops floating. Why? Well I don't know. I mean the next time we see the scarab stop floating was when it led Harrow successfully to Ammit's tomb. So why did the scarab stop floating immediately Marc showed up?
•When Harrow took Steven to his lair he asks Steven about the scarab. As soon as Harrow mentions 'the scarab' all his disciples in the room stand up and start walking towards Steven. Initially, I thought they were going to help Harrow torture Steven until he revealed the location of the scarab, but later on we see them standing doing nothing as Steven and Layla escaped from the room. So what exactly were standing up to do in the first place?
•And to Layla. What on earth was she doing in Harrow's lair holding up the scarab in the air for everyone to see. I mean she could have entered there and busted Steven out without anyone ever knowing that she had the scarab. The fact that she was hoping for the Moon Knight to save the day can hardly do as an explanation. At least one thing was clear; Harrow would take the scarab, but I feel the script writers should have figured out a better way for this to happen.
•After Marc transformed to the Moon Knight for the first time in the series, he simply stood clueless instead of attacking the 'jackal' until Layla told him to do so. Why?
•After losing the scarab and all, Marc told Steven he would disappear as soon as he was done serving Khonshu, but after watching episode five we see that this makes no sense since Marc is more like the 'main' person and he sort of created Steven. So what did he mean when he said Steven would never hear from him again? Did he intend to hand over control permanently to Steven or what?
•In the scene where we see Marc and Khonshu converse for the first time, Khonshu was definitely referring to Layla when he said his next avatar was 'near and dear' to Marc. However, in the post credit scene for episode six Khonshu seemed to imply that it was wrong for Marc to think he wanted Layla as his avatar. So was Khonshu bluffing in this episode or was this a mistake on the writers part?
Despite all of these, the Moon Knight is a very good series. The actors just took the acting to another whole level. The visual effects department also deserve massive accolades. They really brought Khonshu's, Ammit's and Taweret's characters to life. The Moon Knight series is still streaming on Disney plus in case you want to re-watch it.
